Vegan Muse #2: Sophia Schrank, 29

Photographer

Meet vegan photographer Sophia. She is full of passion, compassion and talent. Find out how she treasures the art of photography and evolves it into her own version. We uncover her current art obsessions and some of the best vegan spots in LA.

Hi, Sophia. Tell us a little bit about your background. Where are you from and what was your childhood like?

I’m from San Francisco, California, and currently live in Los Angeles. I have also lived in Pittsburgh and New York City. I come from a creative background -- my dad is a photographer as well, and my mama designed graphics (but is now a librarian, and a total rockstar at that!).

Tell us about what you do for a living? Any hobbies?

I am a fashion photographer based in Los Angeles and often get to work with incredible women who own sustainably-minded brands. I work in a variety of formats, but I love shooting on film whenever I can. My work as a stage director has been performed internationally, and I rigorously incorporate my love for theatrical drama into my still work. As far as hobbies go, I love to watch movies. I studied directing in college, so I am constantly influenced by what is happening on stage and in cinema. Right now I am crazy about all things Peter Sellars (his roles in Pink Panther and Doctor Strangelove are just incredible) and of course, Fellini -- the colors and whimsical nature are always inspiring me - I love Pedro Almodovar’s films for the incredible humanity that runs rampant in his stories. Because I live in LA, I love to take advantage of the museum scene, too! I love that there are still days when the Modern Art Museum is free to the public. I love to explore all the nooks and crannies of the city. Because photography is my life, and outside of my friends and family, nothing brings me more joy than visual storytelling.

How long have you been vegan?

Over a year!

Why did you decide to go vegan?

I had always wanted to, but for some reason I never felt I could do it. Then one day, my friend suggested I just give it a try, and within a few days, I felt strongly connected to a kinder, more humane way of life! It is very freeing!

Do you have favorite vegan dishes and restaurants?

Well for one, I am weak for a chia pudding in the morning -- its so easy, and I am always creating variations as my breakfast staple! As far as dishes go, I love anything made with nopales and a ton of delicious grilled root veggies. On the other end of the spectrum, there is this amazing vegan breakfast Thai restaurant called Green Leaves that my boyfriend and I frequent for late night pancakes and vegan egg rolls <3. Swingers has excellent vegan options as well!

What would you like to see in the world 10 years from now?

A "less is more" mentality and universal health care!

Who is YOUR muse and why?

My Partner, Eric. He is the most hardworking and beautiful person in the world. It should also be noted he has an impeccable fashion sense.

I also have a kitten that I am whole-heartedly obsessed with.
